STRAYANA - GREG CHAMPION
He's made cricket and Christmas CDs, comedy and sensible singer songwriter CDs, and with his "around twentieth" album STRAYANA, Greg Champion achieves just about the ideal balance.
STRAYANA has been three years in the cooking, and features a blend of humourous and heartfelt songs with one common thread: they're all about 'STRAYA, and they're all making a statement about who we are as STRAYANS.
What Champs does best is tell us about ourselves. So here you're served up tales about Upper Kumbuckna, working dogs, The Mighty Murray, giant echidnas and razor-toothed ferocious platypusses, a toddler's funeral, fishing boats, Don Bradman [in duet with Kamahl] and two songs inspired by Torres Strait Islander music. The first single is track one Bushman From The Outback, owing a little to Commander Cody, Bob Wills - and to Stuie French!
Since Champs studied Australian Lit. at Adelaide Uni. in his youth, he's set himself the goal of producing songs with Australian references, that seek to define who we are. And his definitive moments - Cricket's On The Radio, Australians Let Us Barbecue (with Bucko), The Backyard At Mum's, The Fridge Full Of Coldies - deal with what it's like to be STRAYAN.
On STRAYANA Greg Champion pulls together perhaps his best combination of Aussie songs since his first vinyl record in 1990. Some of these twelve tunes are new and others have been patiently waiting their time.
Half the album was made under the guidance of Rod McCormack. Three Swing-style songs were recorded with Stuie French, and three others were made in a backyard garage studio in suburban Clayton, Melbourne.
Greg Champion would readily concede he's wandered all over the road with his twenty odd albums. Now, he's really getting down to business. STRAYANA is the Champs we know and the album we expect from him.
Released by Compass Bros and distributed by Shock, STRAYANA puts Greg Champion at the forefront of Aussie-style music.
STRAYANA was launched in January ('09) at the Tamworth Country Music Festival.
