Spiro Malakellis (1992)

tune: living next door to Alice      these words: greg champion

Spiro was raised in a fishing town

By the Adriatic Sea near a soccer ground

Above the Parthenon, just outside Athens

He played with a ball on the streets with the kids

And it soon became clear from the tricks he did

He was going to be – above average

CH.

Oh I don’t know how they found him, but I’m just glad they did

Recruited from the Amos. As a seven-year-old kid

Oh there’s never been a hero, big as Spiro Malakellis

Twenty-four years and destined for fame

Five foot seven tall and getting shorter every game

No there’s never been a hero, big as Spiro Malakellis

2.

Then one fateful day his Papa came home

He said “pack up your things, on a journey we’re goin’

To the big football ground, Down Under”

To the second biggest Greek community in the world

Where there’s plenty of Ouzo and lotsa Greek girls

I’m gonna get a fish & chippery – in Anakie
