By 1979, he had moved to Melbourne and met with success as front man of ground-breaking Melbourne rock band The Fabulaires, moving on to The Young Homebuyers. Champs then gravitated to the world of Aussie Folk and Country Music, soon becoming a leading Australiana songwriter and performer. By the Nineties, Greg had collected a number of industry awards and nominations. He twice won the comedy/novelty song category at the Tamworth Songwriters' Association Awards and has two ARIA nominations for comedy releases. His Australian folk style has led to regular appearances across the nation, as far afield as Weipa, Flinders Island, Keppel Island, Katherine, Coober Pedy, Tamworth, Port Fairy and Upper Kumbuckna.
