BEST OF greg champion

Released for Tamworth 2003

If you don't have a new record for the Tamworth Festival, then, in the words of the great John Clarke, "you're a fool to yourself and a burden to others". In keeping with this fine Aussie custom, Champs Global Inc. will release, just in time for the Festival, Greg Champion's first, last and only BEST OF collection.

Selected from six CDs released during the '90s, some of which are out of print, the Champs Global office is responding to perennial enquiries for oft-requested favourites from earlier albums. Furthermore, the Global office has included some hard-to-get rarities that don't appear on any of Greg Champion's mainstream albums of the past decade.

Songs that had to be selected include See You Again Sometime, the closing theme for John Nutting's Saturday Night Country on ABC radio for the past six years; Boomaroo Flyer, the truck song that Slim Dusty recorded in 1997; and Someday Soon, the recent #3 chart hit in duet with Jane Saunders, which 'til now had not been commercially released.

Other crowd pleasers that couldn't be overlooked are You Can Get Arrested For That, which Champs thinks was a top 10 single in the early '90s but he can't remember for certain; Cooee Motel, another top 10 track; Don't Call Wagga Wagga Wagga (three weeks at #2); and 88k From Alice, a strong airplay favourite across the years.

Additional rarities which don't appear on any prior album are Cricket's On The Radio, the theme for the ABC's summer sport broadcasts, and the off-beat Never Turn Right At Burke Road Malvern, a cult airplay hit in Melbourne since 1986. Toss in The North Calls, Cloud On The Moon, More Bad Weather and the obligatory Fridge Full Of Coldies, and that's just some of the 16 tracks on offer.

THE BEST OF greg champion is a retrospective and a snapshot of the interesting career of this individualistic Aussie troubadour -- a career that's about to take a new twist when Champs returns to the national ABC airwaves, after a seven year absence, with the long-running humour/satire show The Coodabeen Champions, set to be heard every Sunday night nationwide, from January 26.
